Moments in Film: Lost In Translation (Sofia Coppola, 2003)

I made this gif to emphasise one thing: it’s in this scene when we first see Bob enter Charlotte’s “personal space”. What I find interesting is he’s not invited but he’s not invading it either; a sense of comfort has already been established between the two in such a short span of time. That being said, Bob still extends his arm out - he doesn’t lean over, giving them both space incase the first intuition was wrong. It’s such a short moment but one I remember vividly because when their conversation was over, I felt like I was watching two childhood friends meeting back up after 10 years and getting to know each other again. Charlotte’s eye contact with Bob and Bob’s lack of eye contact with Charlotte introduced where both of them were.

As the tagline goes: Everyone wants to be found. In this case, it’s Charlotte wanting to be found by Bob to combat the loneliness and neglect she feels from her husband.
